Christmas Awe

Let All Angels Worship Him

(This post is adapted from the December 16th entry in Our Daily Bread, a daily devotional published by Our Daily Bread Ministries 2020)

A man was in London one night for a meeting. It was pouring rain and he was late. Rushing through the streets, he turned a corner . . . and was stopped dead in his tracks. Dozens of angels hovered above Regent Street, their shimmering wings stretching across the traffic. Made of thousands of pulsating lights, it was the most amazing Christmas display he had ever seen. He wasn’t the only one captivated. Hundreds lined the street, gazing up in awe.

“Awe is central to the Christmas story,” says Our Daily Bread writer, Sheridan Voysey, the hurried London traveler. “When the angel appeared to Mary explaining she would miraculously conceive (Luke 1:26-38), and to the shepherds announcing Jesus’ birth (Luke 2:8-20), each reacted with fear, wonder—and awe.” Looking around at the Regent Street crowd, Sheridan wondered if he was experiencing in part what those first angelic encounters felt like. (See more amazing images HERE).

Then a split second later, the man noticed something else. Some of the angels had their hands and arms raised, as if they too were gazing up at something. Like the angelic choir that burst into song at the mention of Jesus’ name (Luke 2:13-14), it seems angels too can be caught up in awe as they gaze on Him.

If the angel-themed Christmas display can stop a frenzied traveler and Londoners in their tracks, imagine the moment when we meet Jesus face-to-face . . . and those friends and family members ushered into his presence before us.

Christmas Blessings to you and family, courtesy of Our Daily Bread . . . and a hurried traveler. Rejoice this Christmas Season . . . and Praise God for the gift of our Savior.

“The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representative of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. For to which of the angels did God ever say, ‘You are my Son; today I have become your Father.’” (Hebrews 1:3, 5)
